a self-managed sound module in Dutch light

Just a short little one today :)

video is under 2 minutes

I've been tuned into this guy Gijs Gieskes for a few years now, he's an electronic instrument designer who makes these really really really fun and weird projects. Some of the things he makes are instruments, or like synthesizer modules that you can play in a musical way and operate in the context of rhythms and patterns and pitch classes and so on. But some of the stuff is more like an electronic objet d'art or kinetic sculpture-- there's a circuit that makes some sort of sound or moves in a certain way, and you have to engage in it abstractly. They're nice to watch and listen to. As a video genre, I would put these in the shared space between synthesizer demo and garden report. Some, like the one above, are solar powered, and designed for indirect light, like a philodendron.

Gijs' YouTube channel has a lot of what might be tests of ideas, or they might be finished works, I can't tell, and there doesn't really need to be a distinction. He also has a really nice and crazy website, on which he sells many of his creations and has more documentation: [https://gieskes.nl/]. Actually it seems like the YouTube channel is strictly for hosting the videos on his website, and not designed to be viewed independently (no talking). Again, his website is really great, but this is a nice way to view his oeuvre, just an endless string of "here's this" with no other context, flipping through the book and looking at the pictures. Absolutely click around the channel if you like this and definitely click the link in any of the vids to learn more, or to see better pics, and sometimes schematics. Like the best art, it will not inspire you to directly copy what he's doing, but it may inspire you to do your own thing to a greater degree, or with a different energy.

Peace everyone :)
