Sakiko’s first cousin is in a Herman harp ensemble, they played a show at the toy museum (museum for toys) this afternoon. The Herman harp is like a hammered dulcimer without the hammers, with a place for the sheet music behind the strings that shows you exactly where to pluck. It was kind of like the hat era of Fat Day- a group of four people playing two notes at a time, working together to create chords and harmonies. Unlike Fat Day, they played arrangements of Strauss waltzes and sentimental Japanese sing-alongs.

Waking up in Tottori City. I’m at a cute little bagel store on a second floor, the sign is a board with a hole in it. I’m not gonna get into bagel wars here, the bagel may not have been “a true bagel” but I enjoyed eating it, with butter, a side salad, half a hard boiled egg, yogurt with strawberries, and two small disks of the local tofu speciality. If you need another cup of coffee just say “kohee mo ipai” that means “coffee again one”. I said it and it worked.

Community egg-boiling station at the seaside hot springs foot-bath. I don’t think it looks like a foot on purpose, I think it just does. 20 minutes for a perfect egg THEY SAY

I got kitsune udon, that’s noodles with a special kind of fried tofu. Kitsune means fox, which is a magical animal in Japan, and everywhere really. I asked why this kind of fried tofu is named kitsune and the best answer I got was “it’s their favorite food”. Fair enough!

Waking up in Kyoto. Stayed up late drawing temples, trains, horses, and train-animal hybrids with Tamagodon. Getting ok at drawing horses. Shout-out to Matt Carroll for teaching me how to to think about horse legs, and shout out to Katie Wade who sat next to me in 4th grade and drew horse after horse– I didn’t realize at the time how difficult it is! The trick to the leg is to think of it like human leg but the top part of the leg (hip to knee) is real tiny and basically inside the body, and every other part is extended- what looks like a backwards knee is basically an ankle. Front legs are sort of like human arms with a similar displacement. A horse is a good thing to get people that don’t draw to try to draw, I recommend it. And thinking of things as having similar drive trains but with different ratios is a very useful analogy framework.
